Maintaining proper braking on a car is important, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. Even more so, it is important to understand that with such an important component of a car, the brakes should be carefully looked after and if the system needs any sort of Brake Repair, it should be attended to as quickly as possible.
Worn Brake Pads
The first and the most common issue that comes up with the brakes on a car are worn down brake pads. These worn down pads are designed and constructed to give optimal braking power, even as they wear, but, when the pads wear down too much, problems can occur.
Complications From Old Pads
The good thing is that brake pads typically come with wear indicators. These are small metal tabs that will rub against brake rotors, whether the car is under braking or not. This is a warning to the car owner that the brake pads are nearing the end of their lifespan.
While a car can be driven for a little while when the wear indicators are squealing, driving too long can result in the pads wearing down completely, causing the metal base for the pads to come in contact with the brake rotors. This will not only create a horrible metal on metal grinding sound, but it will diminish braking power and it will damage the rotors themselves.
Another common issue are warped or damaged brake rotors. This can happen because of grooves wore into the rotor due to brake pad dragging. In addition, overheating the rotors, mainly because of heavy high speed braking, can cause the car to shake when braking at high speeds. While the car can be driven with this condition, it doesn’t make for smooth driving. Over time a compromised rotor can also break. The good thing is that the rotor can be taken off and machined smooth or if they are warped, replacement rotors can be installed for a minimal price.
While there are other repair issues that can occur with the brakes, like a faulty master cylinder or faulty brake lines, bringing any brake issues to the attention of a mechanic is paramount. To maintain a proper driving experience and to remain safe on the road, any brake system repair needed should be performed as quickly as possible.
